Ben Bernanke, former US Federal Reserve chief, wins Nobel Prize
This document is a press article written in October 2022 on the BBC’s website.
It tackles the awarding of the Noble Prize in Economics to Ben Bernanke, an American economist of the Keynesian school of thought who served two terms as president of the Federal Reserve in the United States.
The awarding of this prize can be seen as controversial because on the one hand some people emphasize the necessity of his work, all that it has allowed, and on the other hand others stress the consequences of his policies
Indeed, on the one hand it allowed the world economy not to collapse during the crisis of 2008, by pushing the Federal Reserve to act aggressively by buying up bankrupt companies for instance.
But on the other hand, the economic tools he developed had unintended effects on households.
