China attacks US diplomatic boycott of Winter Games as ‘travesty’ of Olympic spirit.

-> Ouïghours

-> Créations de stades donc ouvriers meurent

-Peng Shuai

-> AUKUS

-Soft power

This is a press article written by Helen Davidson, on Tuesday 7 December 2021, in the newspaper The Guardian.

It tackles diplomatic relations between China and the US about next year’s Winter Olympics.

China blames the boycott of the Americans against these Olympic games that they consider unacceptable.

In fact, the Americans have denounced the lack of respect for human rights in China. This boycott has generated a strong reaction of public opinion, which has pushed other countries like New Zealand to also take initiatives such as not sending representatives to the games.

Thus,Chinese officials tried to retort by explaining that the U.S. is boycotting when they were not even initially invited in the first place.

We can wonder : "Should human rights issues interfere in the field of sports?

At first we will see that the sport is a point of pressure on China because it is a very controversial country

Then, that sport can be seen as a political showcase while initially these are not the values of sport.

Sport pressure point as China is controversial

First of all, it is not unheard of for China to be singled out by numerous media scandals. As shown by the humanitarian scandal of the Uyghurs who are a population of Turkish origin who live in China but are persecuted by the Chinese authorities as terrorists. But also by the large number of foreign workers who die during the construction of the stadiums

On the other hand, the internal policy conducted by the Communist Party is not good. We can think of the social credit system that rewards honest citizens but punishes others. What is also worrying is the recent political scandal of the tennis player who disappeared after denouncing that she was raped by a high ranking official of the Beijing regime.

However, it is well the sanitary crisis which is used as main argument to express the reticence of the world leaders in front of the organization of the Olympic games, as there can be this summer with the Olympic games in Japan

Transition : Thus, it seems normal that China is blamed for what it does but we can wonder if it is legitimate that politics intervenes in sport and becomes a geopolitical issue ?

II) Sport is a means of exercising politics (it is a political showcase).

Sport is a way to assert one's ideals, it is a geopolitical competition. This is what the AUKUS alliance (Australia, United-Kingdom, United States) presents here: we are talking about the alignment of the Australian strategy with the American one, but also the Canadian and New Zealand ones, which are also close to this alliance. The goal of this alliance is to compete with China, so we speak of Great power competition).

The sports events can also have an objective to show the power of the country: political stakes to show that one is better than the others. Hence the very famous basketball final between the USSR and the USA which was a scandal because it was much more than a final, but an ideological fight and also the Nazi Olympic games of 1936 to show the superiority of the Aryan race.

This is why sports events can also be an asset for the host country, which can be a source of tension. Indeed, the host country will allow the city to develop and to make the economy work by creating infrastructures and stadiums. It is the soft power like the future Olympic Games in Paris by 2024, which will make the city's economy work.

Transition : However, initially this was not the vocation of the sport. On the contrary, in the beginning it was based on better principles.

III) However, if we go back to the values of sports, it is not like that at all.

Initially, the purpose of sport is to bring together people who share the same sporting passions and to put aside differences: like supporters of a soccer club, or people who practice the same sport like a karate club.

Furthermore, originally, the Olympic Games are a religious festival in honor of Zeus, so rather a moment of sharing. It is in a commemorative and union spirit that this sporting event was created.

But the most important thing is that sport also allows everyone to shine, because it is the expression of this competitiveness in a passive form, according to the rules of art, according to the rules of sport. May the best man win.

Conclusion : At the end of the day, It is possible that the relations between the USA and China will become more complicated and that we will see them transforming and touching other domains such as sports, culture, education, which will then become subjects of competition when fundamentally they are not. Like the competition that existed between the USSR and the USA during the cold war, this can cause a great deal of damage.

Let's see what it will become
